Computer Based Training

Computer based training, or CBT is fast becoming an important component in all types of training programs.

While it has not yet surpassed instructor based training, or IBT, the concept of computer based learning is gaining momentum. If you’ve ever used an online tutorial to help you learn how to use a new piece of software, you’ve already participated in one type of computer based training.

What is it?

The best way to describe computer based training is as a self-paced course of instruction. Both large and small-sized employers utilize this type of training for new hires and for on-going work-related training.

Computer based training is also being incorporated into the curriculum at every level of learning, from grade school all the way up through college. In fact today it is possible to complete the coursework for an entire 4-year degree without ever stepping foot on campus.

And it’s not just the online colleges that use this type of training. Ivy-league colleges and state-run universities alike now offer many of their courses online. The courses being offered online are core courses as well as electives and all are full credit courses, complete with structured review chapters, quizzes, mid-terms and final examinations.

Advantages of computer based training

One of the biggest advantages of computer based training is that students can progress at their own pace. If the student needs another round of explanation in order to fully grasp the topic, then that student can get it. Once a topic is mastered, the student is free to continue on to the next. He doesn’t have to wait while the instructor goes over the material repeatedly until the entire class grasps it.

Another big advantage is flexibility. Students for the most part can log on and learn when it’s most convenient for them. This type of flexibility eliminates the hassle of trying to schedule classes around work or other obligations. Early morning, late in the evening or anytime in between is usually when computer based training is available.

Disadvantages of computer based training

Some students miss the one-on-one interaction made possible by instructor based training. The ability to ask questions and receive an answer in real time is probably one of the biggest disadvantages of computer based training. And not everyone is comfortable working on a computer. Some people lack computer experience or are intimidated by computers which can sometimes impede their ability to learn the material being presented.
